FUTURE TRADITIONS _ 2.0

The Future Traditions project is an international research and education development
programme launched in 2015 by the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in partnership
with the University of South-Eastern Norway. Its aim is the innovative reinterpretation of
traditional folk art forms and their closely associated archaic craft techniques through the
contemporary methodology of design research. The programme is grounded in international
bilateral collaboration, realised through the individual research and development projects of
university students as they explore cultural values rooted in folkloric traditions. This
exhibition presents outcomes of the collaboration with Marmara University in Istanbul,
ongoing since September 2024, in the form of works by 15 Hungarian and 10 Turkish
students. The participating faculty and students represent a broad range of design
disciplines, from textile design to object creation. Having become a permanent and defining
element of the MA Fashion and Textile Design curriculum at the Moholy-Nagy University of
Art and Design, the Future Traditions programme provides a recurring impetus for
international expansion — inviting foreign universities and professional partners into its
evolving network. Realised as part of the Hungarian–Turkish Cultural Season, this project was
jointly developed by the two universities within the framework of a co-curated semester,
fostering mutual exploration of Turkish and Hungarian traditional pattern and form cultures,
and their integration into contemporary design practice.
